Unlike Duryoudhana, Ravana was a very learned being, but he had a very high ego, the reason was that he had an ego was due to him being a scholar, Duryodhana on the other hand thought of bad deeds every moment of his living life. Ravana wasnt really cruel but had cruel intentions on the people who didnt follow on his core beliefs systems of being a Shaiva ( or being a devotee of Lord Shiva) and committed atrocities on Vaishnavites, whose core belief system consists of worshipping Vishnu as their main deity.
